Hand Crafts Shopping for handcrafts is one of Chile’s most unique shopping experiences. Craft fairs (ferias artesenales) are a celebration of Chilean culture, offering items that represent Chilean tradition, history and folklore. A typical craft fair offers items like alpaca wool clothing (ropa de lana de alpaca), copper souvenirs (cobre) and Rapa Nui statuettes. Some of the finest handcrafts are the items made by members of Chile’s major indigenous groups, the Aymara and Mapuche. Most craft fairs sell Andean and Mapuche musical instruments like zampoñas (Andean pan flutes), charangos (small 10-string guitar), palos de agua (Aymara rain sticks) and kultrunes (Mapuche ceremonial drum).
