Earthquakes Santiago lies in one of the most seismically active regions in the world. You are almost certain to experience more than one tremor (temblor) while you are in the Chile. Earthquakes (terremotos) are common, but major ones only strike every decade or two. When a tremor hits the best advice is not to overreact. By definition, tremors are weak and cause almost no damage. Older buildings are standing only because they have withstood tremors for so long. Newer buildings have been built with reinforced steel to conform to earthquake-resistance guidelines. During an earthquake, you should take precautions. It is still important not to overreact. Do not run out of the building. It is panic that causes the majority of earthquake deaths. Move to the strongest point in the room, which is usually a door frame. Stay away from glass windows and cabinets. |
