Five Cool Walking Stops in Bellas Artes Abarzua The MAVI has no café to call its very own, but Abarzua could easily claim that title. Located half a block down Merced, Abarzua is hip, happening and delicious. Create your own salad, build a sandwich to your liking, enjoy first-class espresso and savor the atmosphere. Couches, tables and outdoor seating are available. The food is always fresh and the beverage selection is one of the best in the area. So after a long day of ogling the masters, sit back and let the staff of Abarzua serve up some artistic flavor. Abarzua is located at Merced 337. Hours are Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays, 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Beverages range in price from $650 CLP to $1600 CLP, food and snacks from $800 CLP to $5000 CLP. Sharing menu items is highly recommended-the café is an ideal spot for a first date. Zoo Hip. There's really no other way to put it. Located at the corner of Santo Domingo and Jose Miguel de la Barra, Zoo is your hip supply store. Adidas hi-tops, the latest Peaches record and Burton clothing are just a few of the goodies that fill this boutique's street-level showcase. As Bellas Artes slowly becomes the artistic paradise that it always should have been, Zoo settles in as the neighborhood cool kid. Whether you're looking for a DJ bag, cool new sneaks or iced-out break beats, Zoo is sure to have them. Zoo is located at Jose Miguel de la Barra 528. Hours are Monday to Wednesday, 12 p.m. to 9 p.m., Thursday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Their website is www.zooconcept.com. Antiques Market If Plaza Mulato's art or Aji's one-of-a-kind clothing aren't enough exposure for one day, Saturday's antique market and book fair will fill the void. When not raining, this handful of antique and used book vendors line Plaza Mulato's cobblestones and peddle unique artifacts like old license plates, cheap English books and an assortment of jewelry. The vendors are friendly and prices usually negotiable. The market is open most Saturdays, occasionally during the week and is free to the public. But beware, leaving empty-handed isn't likely. Bar Nono Young people, cheap beer, Bellavista. If you speak English and you're looking for the chance to have a night in Santiago like no other, pull up a chair and order a pitcher. Located at the corner of Pío Nono and Dardignac one block past the river Mapocho in Bellavista, Bar Nono is where people meet. DJ's, derelicts, travelers and natives all come here and are always looking for something to happen. Bar Nono is located at 99 Pío Nono, with the corner of Dardignac. Hours vary from early afternoon to very late at night. Café Mosqueto Calle Mosqueto was recently remodeled as part of the Centro's renovation. This meant more pedestrian access, higher rents and better exposure for Café Mosqueto-easily one of the best kept secrets in the neighborhood. Coffees, teas, chocolates and snacks fill their leather-bound menu. Modern and classic literature fills their adjoining book store's show windows. With a little time and a few more visitors, Café Mosqueto will easily become a new bohemian center. Café Mosqueto is located at Mosqueto 440. Hours are Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Museums in Bellas Artes Art in Baquedano and Plaza Italia Plaza de Armas: Museums and Art Museums and Art in Quinta Normal The Green Mile Begins Here |
