Stay in Santiago, Chile Hostal Forestal Remember-do not judge a book by its cover, a building by its façade. Many a great passed-up read can be easily rediscovered, but the chance to stay in a place like Hostal Forestal in the heart of Santiago may only come once in a lifetime. What looks like a white door and a quiet street from the outside opens into what is easily a backpacker's paradise. Hot showers, billiards, internet, Spanish Lessons, and more beds and opportunities than could be imagined are waiting at the top of the hostel's staircase. The living room is equipped to play DVD, VCR and whatever Laserdiscs one may have lying around. Breakfast is served every morning and large asados are held every Friday night-just because. Rooms start at just $10 U.S. and credit cards are accepted. Whether you're traveling alone or with a group looking to spread out, there is no lack of space at Hostal Forestal. With three floors and more single, double and marriage-style beds than anywhere else in town, a bed and a unique experience won't be hard to find. That's not to mention that the hostel is located a block away from the Baquedano Metro, on the backside of the Centro Arte Alameda. The location itself is unbeatable. Hostal Forestal is located at Coronel Santiago Bueras 120, one block west of Baquedano. The hostel is open 24 hours a day and both English and Spanish are spoken. Bellavista More than just a neighborhood, Bellavista is a cultural institution unto its own. From bars to discos to restaurants to jewelry, there is undoubtedly something for all walks of life in this colorful neighborhood. Highlights include Pablo Neruda's house La Chascona, Cerro San Cristobal and its enormous Virgin Mary / chapel at the top, the newly inaugurated Patio Bellavista which houses restaurants, ice creameries, artisan craft and jewelry shops, as well as one of the best night lives in Santiago. For those reasons and more, Bellavista makes a great place to stay for young and old alike. Hostels and hotels, rooms for rent and even brand new apartment buildings are open year round for both tourists and new locals looking for a different place to stay. There is enough food drink and activity contained within this Chilean icon to constitute its own mini-vacation. And it also makes for a great stopping point amidst the museums, businesses, shopping and sights that lay just on the other side of the river. So, go to Bellavista with some change in your pocket and an appetite for activity. Explore this rich neighborhood and the never-ending amount of creativity that seeps from its very sidewalks. Enjoy a beer and live a poet's life for an hour. Remember Santiago in a way will make even your most well-traveled friends jealous.
