Long distance and International Calling Chile has separate systems for local and long-distance. To make a long-distance or international call, you must dial the three digit number of a carrier before dialing the telephone number. There are about 10 carriers. Each carrier has different prices for each region or country you are calling. Carrier prices often change, but Transam is usually the cheapest carrier for calls to the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada. To place a national long-distance call: carrier code + area code + number. To place an international call: international: carrier code + 0 + country code +area code + number.  Carriers will give you lower rates if you sign a contract with them. Call the carrier’s information number to arrange a contract. When you have a contract, you will have to dial a different sequence to place call. To place a national long-distance call (with a contract): 0 + area code + number for long distance calls within Chile. To find out more about cheap international calling cards.
