Internet Broadband Service Providers Santiago’s Internet service providers offer state of the art technology. Though phone line connections are slow, ISDN and Cable lines are available. Check with your phone company to see if it offers high-speed lines for your modem. Often, your phone company also offers Internet service. VTR provides cable-modem connections with it cable television service. Terra is the most popular Internet service provider. You can pick up a Terra CD-Rom for 900 pesos at computer stores throughout Santiago. In Chile, the Internet is never free. To avoid being surprised by your Internet bill, make sure you understand the fees charged by your Internet service. Some companies offer Internet service sin cargo fijo, which means that you will not pay a monthly base fee. You still have to pay a per-minute fee. This fee often varies, depending upon time of day. Your Internet charges will be included as part of your phone bill. Local phone calls are not free. This means that you will always pay for the phone call when you log on. If you sign up for a plan without a per-minute charge, you will still have to pay a per-minute charge to your phone company.
