Bellavista areaBella Vista

On weekends, Chilean families of modest means make a sight-seeing  pilgrimage through Bellavista, up the Cerro San Cristobal, for a magnificent view of the city, a cable car ride or a visit to the zoo. The beautiful view from the mountain top – the bellavista - no doubt resulted in the neighborhood’s name. At the end of the day the family pilgrimage often concludes with a meal at one of the many low-priced eateries at the foot of the mountain.

The past two decades, however, many new businesses have moved into the area, close as it is to downtown Santiago, and a whole new array of upscale restaurants have sprouted up on streets just off the main drag. The neighborhood is also home to a very important tourism destination that no visitor to Chile should miss: La Chascona, the house where poet Pablo Neruda once lived.

The Bellavista neighborhood also hops at nighttime – offering at least a half dozen good dance spots and another half dozen or so theaters.

Best access: Metro Baquedano, and then cross the river to Pio Nono St.
