DETENTION CENTERS IN SANTIAGO

|
Intelligence services such as the DINA, the CNI and others, set up many secret detention centers throughout Santiago during the military regime. In some cases, these were based on property owned by the Armed Forces and in others, the secret police acquired property expropriated from third parties. Arrested individuals were brought to these places for interrogation, invariably involving torture and, in many cases, disappearance. Many of the over one thousand disappeared in Chile were last seen in one of these houses.
The National Stadium and Chile Stadium, were also used as temporary prison camps in the days immediately after the September 1973 military coup.

The following DINA centers were used for purposes other than detention and do not appear on the map:
Headquarters at Calle Belgrado 11.
The DINA set up its headquarters here, near downtown Santiago. The director's office and the Foreign Department, described earlier, were located here. There is no evidence that prisoners were kept here.
Rinconada de Maipú.
This center was located near Santiago, in the Ovejería sector, on property associated with the University of Chile. It was used by the DINA and later by the CNI with permission from the Minister of Education. The DINA agents made constant use of the building, apparently as a training center. An intelligence training school, supported by the DINA functioned there as well. There is no clear evidence of the presence of prisoners in this center, but it is known that a group of people was executed by the DINA there in 1975.
On various occasions the DINA operated from facilities of other organizations, generally those of the Army or police. In these situations, DINA agents repressed the functions of the organization whose facilities they were using. One example of this type of collaboration is that employed by the DINA and the Maipo Regiment of Valparaíso in the summer of 1975. As a result of the DINA's operations during this period, one person was executed and eight more disappeared after being detained there.
