SEEING AND NOT SEEING
A New Biography Exposes The Contradictions Of Neruda
(Nov. 12, 2004) At the end of the first chapter of “Neruda: A Passion for Life,” Adam Feinstein speculates as to why the young Neftalí Reyes chose “Pablo Neruda” for his nom de plume. The clinching argument has generally been that “Pablo” was plucked from the Italian poetry of which Neftalí was so fond. “Neruda,” the plaque outside his La Chascona house in Santiago attests, comes from the Czech writer Jan Neruda, whose work Neftalí knew from a Chilean journal.

HEROES OF RESISTANCE STAR AT DOCUMENTARY FESTIVAL
(Nov. 12, 2004) Half of a pair of burnt, broken, black-rimmed glasses is the only public artifact that remains of Salvador Allende in Chile and one of the first images of Chilean film director Patricio Guzmán’s documentary “Salvador Allende.”
Narrated by the director himself, the film explores why so little remains of a president who had such a strong impact on Chilean society and revisits the painful failure of his peaceful revolution. Images of mass rallies at the National Stadium and sounds of thousands of Chileans chanting Allende’s name suggests a lost paradise.
