EIGHTY EIGHT AND STILL OF SOUND MIND
Volodia Teitelboim’s Thoughts on Democracy, Neruda and the World

(Aug. 27, 2004) The lucidity (or lack thereof) of an octogenarian has been big news in Chile recently. As he sits beneath his beret, an espresso in his remarkably steady hand, Volodia Teitelboim, 88, is a picture of unbefuddled senectitude.

CHILES NATIONAL LIBRARY

Not Just One More Monument

(Aug. 27, 2004) A visit to the National Library usually scores a low-ranking on your average tourist’s to-do list. It figures low on any resident’s list, for that matter. For whatever reason, the library often remains nothing more than an obvious fixture of any city: for some, it’s an unappealing literary mausoleum, the resting place of millions of old books; for others it’s a frighteningly large repository of information – too daunting in scope to be worth the trouble.

RIGOLETTO AT THE TEATRO MUNICIPAL
The Traditional Opera Makes History in Santiago

(Aug. 27, 2004) Filled with curses, irony, intrigue, vengeance and unrequited love, Verdi’s ‘Rigoletto,’ at the Teatro Municipal attracted a lot of press even before the curtain rose on its first performance. Italian director Stefano Vizioli’s daring and provocative interpretation of the classic opera featured full and partial nudity for the first time ever on Santiago’s Municipal stage. Controversy aside, it is worth noting that the Teatro Municipal will hold a special performance of the opera on Friday, August 27, for Santiago students, with all tickets at 10,000 pesos (US$16).
