NERUDA TURNS 100
Santiago Pays Homage

(July 9, 2004) On Monday, July 12, the world will celebrate what would have been Pablo Neruda’s one hundredth birthday. This poet, politician, activist, diplomat, exile and Noble Prize winner touched as many people within his native land of Chile as outside of it. He immortalized his love of women, the sea, his country’s and adopted countries’ landscapes in volumes of poetry, odes, sonnets and epics.

While the “People’s Poet” will be paid homage everywhere from New Delhi to Barcelona next week (and some celebrations have already begun), the festivities here in Chile will be particularly poignant. In the editorial, “Overdue Ode to Neruda: Chile Tries to Reconcile Love and Politics,” New York Times writer Carolyn Curiel observes, “the poet’s outspoken politics made him unwelcome in his native country for a time, a legacy the current government hopes to bury with praise.”

A GOOD TIME TO RE-RENT “IL POSTINO”
The Film That Evokes Neruda’s Life in Exile Turns 10

(July 9, 2004) As Pablo Neruda’s 100th birthday approaches, so does the 10 year anniversary of the release of “Il Postino” (1994), a film that beautifully imagines Neruda’s years in exile, in which a very strong friendship comes about because of his poetry.
