3rd Gallery Nights

(March 11, 2004) Exhibit enthusiasts and wine-craving freeloaders packed Vitacura’s streets Wednesday for the third Gallery Nights. Seven galleries on and around Alonso de Córdova inaugurated exhibitions simultaneously, creating a welcoming, electric atmosphere. The Santiago Times brings you the must-sees, the downright ridiculous bits and some of what fell in between.

DANCING TO THE TUNE OF THE PAST
(March 11, 2004) In an inconspicuous crumbling theater, women’s rights group MUACCI and the Contemporary Dance Company (OMBA), celebrate and honor female compatriots of Villa Grimaldi, one of Chile’s most infamous detention centers. In this bohemian Barrio Brasil locale, more than 200 people gathered to witness the impressive 45-minute spectacle.

“Four young women use the powerful art of dance to pay tribute to the repression, resistance, and solidarity of the Villa Grimaldi victims. Simple imagery and the lively quartet’s evocative music carry the audience through a plethora of vivid emotions.

‘TWIN SISTERS:’ BEYOND HISTORICAL BLACK AND WHITES

(March 11, 2005) Dutch director Ben Sombogaart’s “Twin Sisters,” based on the novel by Tessa De Loo, is yet another film about the Second World War, but with a very different take.

(March 11, 200) “Voices of the Desert” explores the evocative landscape of northern Chile’s Atacama Desert with its contrast of dry wasteland and towering snow-capped mountains.
