RECLAIMING THE STREETS
Teatro A Mil Under The Stars

(Jan. 14, 2005) Street theater has been the hallmark of the Teatro a Mil festival since its inception in 1994. Historically, the festival has aimed to create new spaces for performers, as well as utilizing public areas as the setting for artistic expression, returning to the streets after the repressive years of the dictatorship.

SPLENDID AMERICA

(Jan. 14, 2005) Just because FotoAmérica2004 is over doesn’t mean that Santiago’s photo scene is not still fizzing. Claudia Gacitúa’s latest project, “Esplendor Latino,” reveals portraits of 22 splendid Latinos, who, if it weren’t for the exceptionally high quality they deliver, might just as well have been selected from a family album – or 22 different ones.

“They’re from my travels,” she told me at the inauguration. “Random people I met on the streets along with portraits of my friends. Pictures from wherever I bring my camera,” she continued, gesturing as though it were actually hanging over her shoulder.

THE SPEED OF LIFE

(Jan. 14, 2005) “Personal Velocity” (poorly translated into Spanish as “Intimidades”) recently hit movie theaters in Santiago. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize and Excellence in Cinematography Award at the Sundance Film Festival in 2002, “Personal Velocity” is based on a book of short stories written by the director, Rebecca Miller, daughter of playwright Arthur Miller.

IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER

(Jan. 14, 2005) The Diary notes with some confusion that while Joaquín Lavín is devoutly Christian (a member of barmy Vaticanistas Opus Dei) and militantly conservative (if such a thing is not an oxymoron), Joaquín Lavín is a self-professed atheist and liberal lefty with socialist leanings.
