‘WHO’ IS BERLIN? THE SEARCH FOR IDENTITY IN A GLOBALIZED POOL

(Sept. 3, 2004) In the gloomy tunnels of Baquedano metro station sub-ground passengers can experience a world beyond the metrocosmos. While its official building in Parque Forestal undergoes some much-needed restoration, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC) is housing its exhibitions in the station’s Multisala Cultural, under the apropos title “MAC en Tránsito” (MAC in Transition). Currently, the theme of transit is explored in the exhibit “Correspondencias: Berlin entre dos aguas,” the result of a Chilean-German exchange of artists existing since 2002.

STRANGE BUS RIDE: MICRO LESSONS TO LIVE BY

(Sept. 3, 2004) The wheels screetch as the chariot comes to a stop. I’ve depended on these yellow beasts for the past week to take me from point A to point B. Unfortunately they seem to have a mind of their own and often skip right to point Z dropping me in unknown lands.

TRAGEDY OF THE MOOR: ‘OTHELLO’ COMES TO SANTIAGO

(Sept. 3, 2004) The Spaniards have returned, this time on La Católica’s stage, as Shakespeare’s Othello (1602) debuts in Santiago. The malicious Iago plays upon Othello’s fickle temper and reckless zeal, provoking dire actions, and leaving one to wander what sort of trespass warranted such malevolence.

LARRONDO: PAINTING TONGUE IN CHEEK

(Sept. 3, 2004) The brainy works of Spanish “neo-figurist” José María Larrondo are not, categorically speaking, beautiful. While a Picasso can be as visually pleasing as it is calculating intellectually, a Larrondo is really more brains and less looks.
