Bars in Barrio Brasil All prices listed in Chilean Pesos North of Plaza Brasil 2007 2007 Catedral Simply put, 2007 is the most happening place in Barrio Brasil. The Seattle- grungeheads, metal punks, gothic male-queens and your average 'Jorge' all congregate here religiously. Why? Perhaps it's the seating options: there's the cellar-ish front room for the hard-core, the well-lit wing for entourages, and the upstairs lounge room for squatters. The music set fluctuates between rock and electro-pop from the 80's and 90's, and the bar service is quick and reliable. Top this off with cheap liquor prices, and vwala- you've got the most popular bar in Barrio Brasil. Pisco Sour $1.5; Liter Escudo $1.5; Draft $1.5; Avg. Cocktail $2 El Bájon (directly across from bar 2007) is the zeitgeist of the Chilean college bar scene. This bright student hangout, unlike the pricier bars south of Plaza Brasil, boasts pure college perks: budget booze, post-class happy hour, cheap chorrillanas, hi-fi video juke-box, and friendly young bartenders. The red- splashed walls and blaring rock music may turn off the professional crowd, but this prototypical student bar will appease anyone with a young bone in them. Liter Escudo $1.5; No hard alcohol A favorite amongst the locals, Le Trianon is Barrio Brasil's closest outfit to a beer garden-but indoors. Cozy and family-run, the bar offers five rows of picnic- styled tables in a high-ceilinged ex-residential flat. The thirty-something crowd usually settles here for the night, tossing in their two karaoke cents or sipping on a low-impact pisco-sour as local bands (or, more likely, the video jukebox) ups the ambiance. Take advantage of the budget-faring $9 mil pisco/rum bottle package. Pisco Sour $1.5 M-Th 6-9pm; Liter Escudo M-F $1.2; Avg. Cocktail $2.5 Why not turn over the Heineken reins to the customer and have "serve-it- yourself" draft pumps at every table booth? LTS takes customized juke boxes to its natural conclusion-which is, of course, to turn them into alcoholic waterfalls. Unfortunately, only Heineken is available at the table pump, but LTS also offers other bottled beers from behind the not-so-extinct bar. Although tableside booze is a steep $2.6 pesos per liter, you are paying for other Barrio Brasil novelties, such as funky, upbeat music and private booth to drain out your neighbors.
Heineken Liter at your table $2.6; Avg. Beer 300ml $1.5; Avg. Cocktail $2.8 A backpacker's favorite-more due of its location (half a block from Metro Cumming) than anything else-N'Aitún gives off the vibe of a run-down ski lodge. The drinks are noticeably cheaper here than the trendier joints flanking Plaza Brasil, and its homey, wooden-table layout is a nice change of pace. Be warned of the dark lighting, although the more airy upstairs bar opens at 6pm. Beeline here for cheap coffee, pastries, and basic bar drinks on an afternoon when your budget leaves you peso-pinching. Pisco Sour $1.1 M-Th, $1.3 F-Sun; Avg. Cocktail $1.8; No liters or draft beer BarCasa Pub 256 Avda. Brasil The owner of BarCasa Pub pushes the mantra: "The best prices in Barrio Brasil for top-shelf alcohol." That jury is still out, but another verdict is in: BarCasa Pub thinks it's the trendiest bar in Barrio Brasil. The thumping techno music, stark white high-back couches and futuristic cylindrical drink menus all make for an interesting combo in the "down-to-earth" Barrio Brasil parameters. Yet, what better place to hit up than BarCasa Pub on a night when your shimmering disco outfit seems a little out-of-place. Whether BarCasa Pub's pretenses fit the bill…now, that's your verdict. Pisco Sour $1.5; Liters $2; Avg. Cocktail $3 It's hard not to gravitate toward Baires, the Pandora's box of Avenida Brasil. On weekdays, the Andy Warhol-ish retro-rainbow calls your attention to professional entourages sipping martinis and flirting for promotions. On weekends, in comes the university students clinking glasses in time with Jim Morrissey and T-Rex. Since its recent makeover, the two cozy front rooms funnel into a hip, groovy second bar, where the crowds can't seem to get enough of the overpriced (albeit delicious) dumpling appetizers, cheese plates, thai curries and-of course-pisco concoctions. Downside: with all the buzz, it's hard to chat. Pisco Sour $1.2; Avg. Liter $2.3; Avg. Cocktail $3 No, Blondie Snack Bar isn't breaking copyright laws: it's the legit spinoff of Blondie's Discotech. However, the Blondie's novelty wears thin once you realize that Blondie Snack Bar is a miniaturized version Baires up the road. The bar flashes the same Mod London decor and offers a copycat menu of sushi, empanadas, dumplings, and kebabs. It does distinguish itself, however, with a more versatile, Brit-Pop-cum-Alternative Rock music set, and the food and drink prices are the best you'll find on Avenida Brasil. Pisco Sour $1; Liter Escudo $1.3 until 10:30, Fr $1.5, Sat $1.7; Avg. Cocktail $2 Cubico's upstairs level is a great nook to pass a few hours drinking with friends in the early evening. There are plenty of tables to mix'n'match, the ambiance is mellow, and the drinks aren't going to burn a hole in your pocket. This cookie- cutter bar won't win any popularity contest, but with its low-key vibe and Heineken booze on draft, there's certainly a pull factor. Pisco Sour $2; Heineken Liter $1.8; Pitcher Heineken $3; Avg. Cocktail $2.4 When local residents complain about the gentrification of Barrio Brasil, they could turn to My House as an example of its saving grace. Its straight-up, no-fuss assortment of cafeteria tables, edgy rock music, and "buena onda" makes it a classic Barrio Brasil haunt. The service is remarkably down-to-earth and flexible about ever-expanding groups rearranging tables. The only complaint: My House upped its drink prices to stand on par with its neighbors. However, it offers an extensive, relatively cheap food menu (fish filets, steaks, pastas, hot dogs), but in this case, you pay for what you get. Pisco Sour $1.7; Liter Escudo $1.5; Avg. Cocktail $2.8 EntreLatas 1925 Alameda The spray painted sign warns: "Only for the irreverent". Now, substitute "irreverent" with "those capable of withstanding high decibels of throbbing rock" and proceed. La-U may as well nail a sponsorship deal with Entrelatas (Escudo- franchised textbooks?) given all the college students dip in here between-or rather than going to-classes. Besides the student-discounted booze, this drinking hall banks on its mammoth music-video projector, and the fact its decoration consists of recycled beer cans forming a giant dragon-vulture. Enough said. Liter Escudo $1.25; 12 Escudos + Chorrillana = $12.9 Overview of Barrio Brasil Nightlife
