From a skier´s perspective,
the Andes mountain range is Chile's
ultimate blessing. The strategically located Cordillera de Los Andes catches
all of the cold fronts that the Antarctic storm systems can dish out, and
unmercifully dumps fine fluffy powder on the ski slopes all winter
long. There are few places on the planet that produce snow known as
champagne powder, and the Chilean Andes is one of them.
Ski
resorts can be found just an hour and a half east of Santiago, and extend
to nearly the tip of Patagonia (Punta Arenas), with the snow conditions
getting somewhat wetter and heavier the farther south you go. The ski season
normally runs from late June to early October, depending on the
severity of the winter. Chile's best overall resorts, in terms of terrain
and facilities, are mostly close to the capital city of Santiago, although
new investment in more southern resorts is changing the scenario fast. It
is also good to know that if the snow is light in the mountains around Santiago,
you can always count on better snow conditions further south. |

is interlinked with La Parva and El Colorado ski resorts, thus forming
the greatest skiable area of the Southern Hemisphere, sometimes called
