La Campana
National Park:
The best inland excursion in the area. Excellent trails pass
through shady woodlands to the summit of Cerro La Campana
for panoramic views ranging from sea level at Valparaíso
to Aconcagua, South America's highest peak. This 8000 hectare
park is one of the most easily accessible from Santiago, being
only 100 km north-west of the city via the Panamerican highway.
It is also only 40 kms from Valparaiso. It was added to the
park system in the mid-1960's from private donation. La Campana
is located in the dry scrubland of the coastal range and resembles
the arid mountains of Southern California. It still harbors
protected stands of roble, one of the few trees that has naturally
evolved in this harsh environment of limited water and sometimes
blisteringly hot summers. The Chilean palm is also found within
the park limits, a massive tree that can grow to 30 meters
in height and have a 2 meter diameter. This impressive tree
used to be found throughout the country, but due to years
of overexploitation to extract its sugary sap is now only
found in certain areas. The altitude of La Campana varies
between 400 m in the valleys and 2200 m (7,300ft) at the top
of Cerro Campana, the tallest in the park. Attractions: One
of the most popular activities in the park is to climb to
the summit of Cerro Campana (1900 m). Even Darwin could not
resist when he passed through the area over a hundred years
ago. Unfortunately, the incredibly clear views of the snowy
peaks of the Andes to the east and the ships at harbor 40
km away in Valparaiso are rare these days due to the smog
emanating from the metropolitan area. There are several trails
leading to the summit of Cerro Campana, depending on whether
you enter the park from the Palmas de Ocoa entrance in the
north (4 kms from Panamerican highway) or the Granizo entrance
in the south, a longer (12 kms) and more time consuming trip.
Another popular destination is the Salto de La Cortadera,
a 35 meter waterfall that cascades onto granite rocks at the
base of a cliff. This is best in springtime with the stronger
runoff from the winter snow melt.
Administration: There are CONAF ranger posts at each entrance,
with the main station being at the southern Granizo entrance,
about 1 km from the town bearing the same name. For any questions
regarding hiking trails, ask the park guards, they will be
more than happy to help. |
