The Maipo River canyon is the capital's favorite summer recreation area.
Barely an hour from downtown, the canyon is ideal for all sorts of recreation
- hiking, horseback riding, climbing, cycling, paragliding, whitewater
rafting and kayaking. It is the gateway to many ruggedly beautiful valleys
and impressive peaks such as Volcan San Jose (5,800m) and Volcan Maipo.
National Park El Morado is also located in the canyon. Several operators
in Santiago arrange rafting and kayaking excursions down the Maipo, the
closest whitewater to the capital. This massive canyon offers the day
tripper swimming spots and picnic areas, while also offering the hard
core adventurer some of the country's best rock climbing areas as well
as numerous icy peaks or rivers to be run in kayaks. The canyon also
offers many excellent restaurants and artisanal food specialties. Lining
the road are "pan amasado" (fresh bread baked in brick ovens)
stands as well as restaurants offering "kuchen" (fresh pies)
and homemade chocolate. How to get there: For those with their own vehicle,
follow Avenida Los Leones from Providencia to the south. Name will change
to España and Macul. Follow through communa of La Florida, take
left at fork to Puente Alto (on your right). By Bus: From Parque O`Higgins
Metro Station Line 2, every 15 minutes between 06:00-22:30, to San Jose
de Maipo, and every half an hour to San Alfonso. Buses are recognizable
because they are not the traditional yellow, they are sky-blue and will
have signs "Cajon del Maipo" . The trip takes generally one
hour (without heavy traffic). Rates: US$ 1.3 (round trip).
