Plaza Muñoz
Gamero:
Surrounded by Avs. Roca and Puerto Montt, and J. Noogueira and
Magallanes. A beautifully landscaped plaza at the town's center,
encircled by historical buildings and cypress tress. You'll also
find a monument to Ferdinand Magellan. As for the buildings around
the plaza, visit Palacio Sara Braun (Mon-Fri 3-6 pm; CH$500).
Braun was a widow to a prominent cheep baron. Her house was built
over nine years, as materials were imported from Europe. It is
still a spectactular sight.
Museo de Historia Regional:
(Calle Hernando Magallanes 949, May-Sept.
Mon-Fri 10:30m-2pm; Oct.-April Mon-Sat 10:30am-5pm and Sun
10:30am-2pm, US$1) Beautiful old mansion filled with interesting
artifacts
and decorative objects sent from Europe.
Museo del Recuerdo:
(Ave. Bulnes, inside Instituto Patagonia,
a center dedicated to cultural and scientific research; Mon-Fri
8:30am-11:30am and 3-6pm, Sat 8:30am-1pm; CH$500). A must
see. This gem of a museum contains all kinds of relics from
the past: old horse drawn carriages, farm machinery, steam
engines and cars used in the region at the turn of the twentieth
century. There are also some small replicas of timber-framed
buildings, and a trinero, once a basic form of transportation
in souther Chile because of the damp climate and steep geography.
Museo Salesiano Maggiorino Borgatello:
(7 blocks north of
the plaza, on Ave. Manuel Bulnes. Tues-Sun 10am-1pm and 3-6pm;
CH$500) This museum houses all kinds of geological samples--from
jars of pickled marine animals to mounted insects. There
are also displays that depict the daily habits and weaponry
used by the Fuegian Indians. In one room is a lifesize replica
of the Cave of Hands, a wall painting of which the original
is located in Chile Chico, 1600km north of Punta Arenas.
St. James Church:
(3 blocks from the plaza, calle Waldo Seguel).
A nice looking building, this church is a lingering trace
of the presence of English settlers in the region.
Zona Franca:
(Take a bus from the center of town with "Zona
Franca" written on the front). A strange mish-mash of
vendors of electrical parts, large shops, and a shopping
mall. You'll also find a grand array of whiskey for sale.
