San Pedro de Atacama is a charming adobe desert village with 1000 inhabitants
at the north end of Salar de Atacama, Chile´s largest salt flat
with 3000 square kms. The area has a long history, as the Inca ruins
indicate, and was already inhabited when Pedro de Valdivia and his men
came through 450 years ago. Actually, the entire region was part of Bolivia
a little more than a hundred years ago, having been won by Chile in the
War of the Pacific. Today, this tranquil oasis with its charming plaza
center has become the most popular travel destination for Chilean and
foreign visitors exploring the north.
San
Pedro serves as a home base for exploring the desert backcountry which
includes a string of volcanoes soaring above the desert to heights of
5,900 meters (19,500ft). These arid peaks looming over the pale desert
salt flats make the views of the area breathtaking. From the intensely
colorful landscapes and mystical rock formations of the Valle
de la Luna (Valley of the Moon), to the verdant canyons with bubbling thermal waters
at the base of the volcanoes, an explorer´s desire will never cease
to find new destinations. How To Get There: San Pedro de Atacama is roughly
1600 kms north and east of Santiago (a 22 hour bus ride). One must travel
north to Antofagasta and then northeast to Calama and southeast to the
oasis valley of San Pedro. If coming from the north, the Panamerican
Highway crosses the road to Calama 84 km west of the city. With spare
gas tanks, there are a number of spectacular (and remote) dirt roads
by which to access the area from Argentina, Bolivia or from areas south..

Many people prefer to
see San Pedro's desert sites by bicycle. If you bring camping
gear, you can make a trip out to the El Tatio Geysers. If you
have a van, you can spend about a week covering the entirety
of the geyers and deserts.

Tour Geysers |

|
|
El Tatio Geysers:
This
geyser field is the highest in the world at 4300 meters (14,200ft)
and is located 95 extremely difficult kilometers from the town
of San Pedro. It does not offer geysers that shoot dramatic spouts
many meters into the sky. Rather, it is a field of steaming fumaroles
that, in the light of the newly risen sun, still provide a breathtaking
sight. It is surrounded by tall peaks nearly reaching heights
of 6000 meters (20,000ft). The entire area is being proposed
for a national park, but some business concerns are still pushing
to develop the geothermal energy potential of the area. If driving
your own car, leave San Pedro by no later than 3:30 am in order
to arrive for sunrise when the changing atmospheric pressures
cause the geysers to erupt. Most tours leave at this time and
cost around $20. Excercise caution when walking near the vents,
because the crust surrounding the geysers can be thin and is
prone to break. Be sure to bring a bathingsuit, as most tour
companies will take you to a nearby pool. Some companies make
a stop at the Baños de Puritama thermal water pools and
waterfalls (if you go here without a tour, you must bring your
own food and water).

Pukara de Quitor:
Only
3 Km north of San Pedro, you'll find this partially-restored
12th century fortress, built into a steep hill on the bank of
the Rio San Pedro. Another 4km up the road, you'll encounter
the ancient ruins of an Inca Administrative center in Catarpe.
However, these are less impressive.
