The coastal cordillera creates a dramatic backdrop for Inquique. Once the
nitrate capital of Chile, Inquique is now a sprawling, busy city. After
World War I, which marked the end of nitrate era, Inquique's glory day
was over and many beautiful mansions were abandoned and left to crumble. However,
some buildings in its central square were conserved and in conjunction
with the city's beaches, are enough to attract visitors. There are multiple
opportunities for surfing. Like Arica, Inquique is an excellent point
of departure for outdoor exploration. At the Parque Nacional Volcan Isluga,
situated 33 km up the Panamericana, you can exerience breathtaking altiplano
scenery. Roughly a sixty-five km drive will take you to Pampa del Tamarugal
and the geoglyphs of Pintados, a national reserve. Other drives will
take you to any number of ghosttowns, or trips to geological sites like
geysers and volcanos.
