At the confluence of three rivers, the city of Valdivia is a beehive of activity during the summer, most notably the Noche Valdiviana (Valdivia Night) in February, when decorated boats descend the river and there are spectacular firework displays along the waterfront.
It is 160 kilometers
southwest of Temuco, between the Panamerican Highway and the Pacific
coast. Valdivia began as a military encampment built atop a Mapuche settlement
in the early 1600´s. In the mid 19th century it received a lot
of its present character from high levels of German immigration. Although
European influence has declined, some can still be seen in local food
and the architecture that survived the massive earthquake of 1960.  |
