Temuco is 675 km south of Santiago via the Panamerican Highway. Temuco, currently undergoing high growth rates, is the most conspicuously native city in Chile. Temuco-cityNative Mapuche dominate the marketplaces and the rural buses. Tamuca's Regional de la Araucania retells history from precolumbian times to the present, stressing the successful Mapuche resistance to the Spaniards and the German colonization which followed Chile's final settlement with the Mapuche in the late 19th century. Conguillío National Park, in the Andes east of Temuco, is home to forests of the unique pehuén or Araucaria pine, better known to English-speakers as the monkey-puzzle tree. Thousand year old forests of this uniquely beautiful tree survive in certain protected areas east of the city. Another park easily accessible from Temuco is Tolhuaca National Park to the northeast. Now, Temuco is the largest commercial center in Southern Chile, a hub that has been transformed since the late 19th century by a steady influx of european immigration and modern commercial activity.
