Vicente Pérez
Rosales National Park:
Approx. 66 km E of Puerto Varas, near
the town of Ensenada, this was Chile´s first national park.
With its pristine lakes, native forest and snow capped volcanoes
(maximum altitude of 3400 meters), this is one of the most impressive
natural regions in the Lake District. The Lago Todos los Santos,
the most beautiful of all lakes in southern Chile, lies in the
heart of Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park. There are
opportunities for hiking, sea kayaking and more. Contact any
of the tour agencies in Puerto Varas for info or excursions.
It must be known that this is the lakes region, and what causes
lakes? Rain. There are an average of 200 days of rain a year
in the region, but summertime (December through February) is
the driest. For more information, look in the National Parks
directory, available from the home page of this site.

There are many tour
groups ready to take you rafting down the Petrohue River (grade
3 or 4); canyoning, and horse-back riding. We recommend making
the trip to the Cochamo Valley for the best horse-back riding
around. In the Lake District of Chilean Patagonia, the valley
of Cochamó is a hidden natural gem. 250,000 hectares of
hectares of native Valdivian temperate rainforest can be found
here - one of the few places in the world where such a pristine
wilderness still exists. Along the clear waters of a fjord is
the tiny fishing village of Cochamó, accessible by a gravel
road built just ten years ago. Its colorful wood shingled houses
contrast with the amazing blue - sometimes turquoise - ocean
and the snow-capped volcanoes behind. The only way to access
this unspoiled valley is on horseback or walking. Less than 300
tourists come each year to enjoy this paradise of crystalline
rivers, waterfalls and South America's most intact temperate
rainforest with ancient Alerce trees. The second-oldest living
tree on earth, Alerces are giant trees reaching about 40m high
and can be as old as 3000 years. Found only in Chile & Argentina,
they gained protection status as a national monument in 1976.
Try the 4 days/3 nights PIONEER TRAIL – a unique Andean
trail for riders and non-riders. Explore the wilderness of an
isolated 300 year old trail only used in the past by missionaries
and bandits by riding through native Valdivian temperate rainforest
surrounded by mountains, lakes, waterfalls and rivers. Discover
3000 years old Alerce trees, have contact to locals in one of
the most magnificent landscapes in the world, the fascinating
Cochamo valley which in its beauty is often compared to “Yosemite”.
Price: US$ 349.-per person, (included is 1 night at the Riverside
Lodge, 2 nights at the Mountain Lodge, all meals, special diet
on request, multilingual guides, riding helmets, waterproofed
packsacks, raingear and camerabags) drinks and private transfer
are not included. US$37 p/p for Dinner, Breakfast & overnight
in Riverside Lodge one night stay
