Osorno

Founded in 1558 between the Rahue and Damas rivers, the city was abandoned for two hundred years as a result of the powerful Mapuche rebellion of 1599. Osorno’s most spectacular sight and biggest attraction is the nearby Volcán Antillanca. Osorno - Vulcano

After resettlement, the city grew slowly and still had only 5000 residents, many of German ancestry, at the turn of this century. The city has now blossomed to 110,000 people in recent years. Its economy is still primarily based upon agriculture, but tourism is increasing. Osorno. It is also one of the most convenient cities from which to explore the Lake District. East of the city one can find the famous Termas de Puyehue and the awesome beauty of the 107,000 hectare Parque Nacional Puyehue, Chile´s most visited park. Once the center for German colonization in southern Chile, Osorno still retains some Bavarian influence in its architecture and restaurants. It is also a major highway junction for reaching San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina.

	Museo Histórico Regional: Matta 809, (56-64) 233-618; Mon. - Fri. 10am - noon, 3pm - 6pm; Sat. 11am 1pm, 4-6pm. Admission free A collection of many old photos, an assorted mix of history from the colonial era, and archeology, including bones and teeth of a mastadon, housed in a stone building.


		National Park, Outdoor Recreation

	Puyehue National Park: A beautiful park with excellent hot springs; camping areas, and hiking trails. Sweet backcountry skiing in winter. Camino Aguas Calientes, 80 km E of Osorno. This mountainous area of 107,000 hectares is the most popular of all Chilean parks. It is located only 75 kms east of Osorno via the paved international highway to Argentina. The park was created to protect the varying types of forests that grow amidst the outrageous Volcánic scenery. Just outside the park are the Termas de Puyehue, one of Chile's most famous hotsprings resorts. There was a major eruption of Volcán Puyehue inside the park in 1960, as can be noted by its barren slopes, devoid of vegetation. At the foot of Volcán Casablanca is the ski resort of Antillanca. It has three lifts, 460 meters of vertical drop and offers a wonderful excuse to get out and enjoy the beauty of the area in wintertime.

	Parque Nacional Vicente Peréz Rosales: Vicente Pérez Rosales is the adventure travel center for the southern mainland lake district. Activities like rafting on the Río Petrohué, climbing snowcapped Volcán Osorno, and hiking among the steep canyons surrounding the lake are popular activities for both foreigners and Chileans. There is acommodation at the villages of Petrohué, at the west end of Lago Todos Los Santos, and at Peulla, at the east end of the lake. The Puerto Varas adventure tour operator Aqua Motion has its operations headquarters at Petrohué, where it's possible to make arrangements for any of its excursions.
