Chaitén is a sleepy little town that was settled in the early part of this century. Although often overlooked when the region of Patagonia is considered, has its own charm and is situated in an absolutely breathtaking environment. ChaitenIt is a port town and military outpost that is located on the ocean across from the island of Chiloé. Rising abruptly from the lowlands of town are the densely forested moutons that cause the area to be known as the ¨cold jungle.¨ Chaitén is in the middle of the temperate rainforest that makes up Patagonia, and as such it receives several meters of rain every year. Yes, that´s several meters! Still, there has never been any flooding in town or in the surrounding region, as the land is accustomed to heavy rains and the porous volcanic soils efficiently disperse new precipitation. Chaitén is the main ferry port connecting the Carretera Austral with the island of Chiloé and the city of Puerto Montt. From Chaitén there are bus connections south to Coyhaique, passing through spectacular Queulat National Park, and to the town of Futaleufú, where the Futaleufú river is one of the world’s greatest for whitewater rafting. This all makes the town of Chaitén not only a necessary stopping off point for travel further south, but a pleasant one at that.

  Scenic Drive

Carretera Austral:
This quiet stretch of unpaved road goes south to Coyhaique and, with the help of a few ferries, north to Puerto Montt. It weaves its way through the beauty of Patagonia and passes hanging glaciers, countless waterfalls and massive stands of ancient forests. It makes one remember that the beauty of a trip is not only in the destination, but in the journey as well.

  Thermal Baths

Termas de Amarillo:
25 km S of Chaitén, 5 km E of Amarillo. Rustic and very hot mineral baths, camping available. The setting is beautiful, along a rushing river in a narrow forested valley. Unfortunately, the facilities are a run-down due to a legal squabble that kept the area closed for several years. The Chilean Forest Service (Conaf) has just taken over administration of the springs and renovations are planned.
Cost per person: US$3.50.
